HARNESS USE AND INSPECTION (H)

IPAF HARNESS USE AND INSPECTION (H) course is designed to instruct a candidate to safely select inspect and use a harnesses and lanyards for restraint on a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) or Mast Climbing Work Platform (MCWP).

Harnesses are designed to be easy to use and offer a safe way to work at height, but by law delegates should take this course to comply with the duties placed upon employers and employees for use the equipment more effectively and safely.

Objectives

By the end of the course candidates will be:

Understand the relevant health and safety regulations, guidance and standards
Be able to identify and select the correct form of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) against falls from height when working from a MEWP or MCWP
Understand how to check, use, maintain and store a harness and lanyard in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
Be able to fit and adjust a harness and lanyard

Be able to conduct a periodic or an interim inspection on a harness and lanyard used for restraint on a MEWP or MCWP
Be able to maintain associated records

Theoretical training

Introduction (inc. pre-theory)

Legislation, standards and guidance
(HSWA, MHSWR, PUWER, LOLER, WAHR, PPE, CE Markings and how often should you inspect your harness)

Hierarchy of fall protection measures
Safe work at height, avoidance, work restraint, work position and fall arrest

Location

All IPAF tests and trainings can be delivered at YOUR SITE or at OUR TRAINING CENTERS in Eye (IP23 7HN) and Stonham (IP14 5DT) in English and in a range of Eastern European languages as Polish, Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Hungarian, Spanish

To maintain high standards, IPAF demands that courses provided by IPAF Approved Training Centres meet the stated Instructor / Machine / Trainee ratios, which must not be exceeded:

On successful completion candidates will receive only certificate no PAL Card.

Since the safe use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms requires that delegates consult safety notices and read and thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual, literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for any MEWP user.

Similarly, since the assembly and use of MEWPS can be physically demanding, users should be physically fit and in good health and should, generally, not have problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, fear of heights / vertigo, giddiness / difficulty with balance, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness.

If delegates have any problems with literacy or language comprehension, or have any doubts about their fitness to use a MEWP, they must bring them to the attention of their employer. This need not preclude them from using MEWPS, provided their employer conducts an assessment and is able to put into place adequate measures, to take account of any difficulties they may have.
